Fourteen-year-old Finn is a loner, living with his dad and his amazing dog, Dylan. This summer, Finn is hoping for a job where he doesn't have to talk to anyone except his buddy, Matthew. Then he meets Johanna, who's living next door. She's a graduate student in her 20s, cool and funny, and she treats Finn as an equal. Dylan thinks she's great too.
Johanna's dealing with breast cancer, and Matthew and Finn help take care of her - and come to care for her. When she hires Finn to create a garden, his efforts backfire comically. But Johanna, and working in the garden, help Finn discover his hidden talent for connecting with people.

My family has enjoyed a number of Gary Paulsen's books over the years. He is an engaging storyteller for both children and adults. Even with our enjoyment of his previous works of both fiction and non-fiction, we were captivated by "Notes from the Dog". This is a charming tale filled with compelling characters. The story addresses the issues of childhood isolation, non-traditional families, community, and a young adult fighting cancer. These topics are not for young children, but can open the door for family discussions of relevance. We truly enjoyed the story and hope for many more fine stories from Mr. Paulsen.Product details

Notes from the Dog (Audible Audio Edition) Gary Paulsen Nick Podehl Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
Loved Notes from the Dog!! Couldn't put the book down. Held my attention to the end! A book for everyone to enjoy!!
This book is so good at first I started to read it but I do not like reading but I needed something to do one day ans started and could not stop it was so good I did not want to put it down
Excellent human interest story. Shows how teenagers can be given opportunities to be compassionate and involved with good causes. Book new. Good story.
Notes from the dog was AWSOME!!!!i had to do a book report on it and it was almost a mercicle because the report always ruins the book not this one OMG it was soooo good!!!!!!!(I highly recommend it)
if you enjoy stories about growing up with animals and beautiful neighbors you will love this book. it has a slightly more serious tone compared with some of his other works but has it's light moments too.
I was assigned to read this book as a summer project. I saw the cover, looked at the name, and assumed it was some kid's talking dog story. What I didn't expect to find was a really heart wrenching story. Just another one of the examples of why you should never judge a book by it's cover. The only thing I could ask for is a better explanation on what happened to Johanna. Great read!
Awesome book. Deals with a young man's journey of growing up over a summer while helping a neighbor deal with cancer. Tells how a community of people can come together to help individuals with severe illness and end up actually helping themselves. The writing is what one would expect from the author of "Hatchet" ... Excellent!
