Collects sixteen new poems--including a long meditation--which transform, by means of the imagination, the ordinary events of daily life into the magic of the events of daily life

Sweet Will Philip Levine 9780985932503 Books

Having read a few of Levine's later collections, I was pleased to learn that Sweet Will, originally published in 1985 (his eleventh volume), was to be re-published. Poems that immediately stand out are 'Salts and Oils,' 'Voyages,' 'Sweet Will,' and 'A Poem with No Ending,' but this is not to say that the rest failed to make an impression, simply that lines from these poems stayed in my mind long after I finished reading them. I don't know of another American poet who is able to capture the essence of what it is to be working class, to give a voice to people who, historically, were mostly voiceless. In Sweet Will and What Work Is, Levine's keen portrayals of the working class will make you shudder, insisting on the humanising of factory workers, people largely excluded from the American consciousness. Throughout, there are whispers of Levine's disaporic background, references to the sea and to journeys, as well as the Irish/Jewish/polish names of workers in the car factories. Without a doubt, essential reading for anyone interested in American Lit/history.

Sweet Will Philip Levine 9780985932503 Books Reviews

I am a great admirer of this poet so finding this 1st edition is particularly meaningful. Already a favorite of mine it now has a special place in my collection.
Love his work, gets to the heart of the working people. Especially reminiscent of the days gone by when so many people were employed by the "Big Three".
I saw Philip Levine being interviewed by Bill Moyers and he read some of his poems. I had to get one of his books. I love that he writes about working class life, the dignity of work, the loss that we have all suffered because of the vanishing middle class.
Have just started reading this; it came highly recommended. Philip Levine writes with a strong voice, with a grasp of words and how they should be used. His work is strong and it penetrates, for me. I'll be using this book in a book group I belong to.
